Living in the Mall

NTSC/Widescreen/TRT 4:57/Color/2023

Located somewhere near the intersection of convenience, technology, social interaction, consumerism and insularity is the relatively new idea of residing in a shopping mall.

This evocative, poetic short film explores that concept using Hudson Yards in Manhattan as a case study. Containing residential, commercial, and cultural spaces, Hudson Yards is the largest mixed-use development in American history. The Mall at Hudson Yards is known for its unique architecture and design, which includes a spacious and open interior, with large windows that offer views of the surrounding cityscape. The mall is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, including luxury brands, high-end fashion retailers, and dining options. One of the key features of the mall is its outdoor space, which includes a large public square, a scenic garden, and a mammoth art structure known as The Vessel.

Apartments located in shopping malls are a relatively new trend in the real estate industry. These apartments are typically positioned above or within shopping centers, providing residents with convenient access to a variety of shops, restaurants, and other amenities. But they come at a cost, as demonstrated in “Living in the Mall”, a thought-provoking meditation on what we give up to gain the security, convenience, and luxury of a life led inside the consumer experience.
