Paints a Picture is a playful documentary that functions on several levels – it’s a straightforward portrait of acclaimed Seattle-based artist Jenni Prange Boran; it’s a look at the artistic process, how a work moves from conception to final piece; and it’s a document of a budding friendship between the artist and the filmmaker. With a relaxed pace, the film begins at the end, with the hanging of the painting, and moves backward to the conception of the artwork, a meeting in a coffeehouse in which the filmmaker and the artist discuss art and shoot a self-portrait photograph, which in this consistently self-reflexive film becomes the basis of the painting at the film’s center.
